Marker Seven announced that it has begun development of a content management and archival system (named "M7 Site Manager") utilizing Microsoft's .NET platform. Development is slated to finish as early as September, with the first beta clients set to implement M7 Site Manager soon thereafter. According to Marker Seven's President, John Clauss, "Many of our clients have repeatedly asked for a content management solution that is both feature rich, yet intuitive and easy to use. It is our intention to develop such a solution, and at a cost that is affordable to everyone. It is our belief that if we utilize Microsoft's .NET platform, we can do exactly this".
To understand why Marker Seven has chosen to develop in .Net, one must first understand the history of Web Services. Although the Application Service Provider (ASP) model has promised to be all things to all people the reality has been much different. Integration of ASP elements into other web applications has either been extremely difficult because of its complexity, or lacking in usefulness because of its simplicity. The emergence of Web Services attempts to address these issues. Web Services expose functionality in a way such that any system that is Web Services compliant can consume them as if they were services located directly on the web server. This allows complex functionality to be delivered very simply to consumers of these services without the need for third party products, COM registration or complex CGI routines. Although Microsoft's .Net Platform has received a lot of recent press, Web Services are not a Microsoft technology and are available on a wide range of platforms, and may be consumed by applications on entirely different development environments. However, .NET goes a lot further than Web Services. At it's core, .NET products are extremely easy to transfer from server to server making the installation of complex applications fast and reliable. According to Dale Cook, Marker Seven's Chief Architect, "By leveraging Microsoft .NET technologies, we at Marker Seven are easily able to provide both an ASP and traditional client/server version(s) of our CMS product. In the ASP instance we store the data, provide backup and maintenance, and guarantee the safety and integrity of the data. We host all the code and other web applications use the Web Services interface to access the functionality, allowing our partners to seamlessly integrate our complex feature set with their own interfaces and branding. If the client wishes to be responsible for their own servers, then because of the ease of transferring .NET applications to other servers, it's simple to have them up and running quickly".
