Case Study: Harper Collins
Headquartered in New York, HarperCollins Publishers is one of the world's leading English-language publishers. Today, HarperCollins is a broad-based publisher with strengths in literary and commercial fiction, business books, children's books, cookbooks, mystery, romance, reference, religious and spiritual books.
The Company’s success is due to their high quality products and customer feedback. Once such product was the Day in the Life of the United States Armed Forces - a portrait in indelible images and eloquent words of the men and women who wear the military uniforms of our country and stand ready to defend our freedoms. For twenty-four hours on October 22, 2002 a team of prize-winning photojournalists, many combat veterans themselves - with the full cooperation of the United States Department of Defense - documented the lives of elite units and freshly minted recruits; of cadets, generals, chaplains, medics, and MPs; of our personnel at desolate outposts and on strategic bases.
To help publicize the Day in the Life project and upcoming book, HarperCollins wanted a Web site devoted to the mission. In selecting a Web design and development firm, HarperCollins not only needed experience, but also commitment to deliver in a compressed timeframe - Marker Seven exceeded the requirements.
Marker Seven worked very quickly to develop a compelling Web site that conveys the story and history of the Day in the Life project and showcases the photography. User-friendly and captivating, the Web site’s unique look encapsulates the essence of the Day in the Life project, the photography.
Along with informing the public of the Day in the Life project, Marker Seven developed a section that allowed people to register to be notified when the book was launched. Users submitted their address. Once HarperCollins released the book, a system-generated e-mail was sent to all of the people letting them know of the book availability. This invaluable tool enabled HarperCollins to gather customer data, gauge public interest, and size-up potential book sales.
In addition, Marker Seven developed sections spotlighting the photos and photographers. The creative team of A Day in the Life of the United States Armed Forces draws depth from the varied and significant professional experience of its members. They come from backgrounds in photojournalism, television and film, as well as book, magazine and multimedia publishing.
With great expertise and diligence, Marker Seven met HarperCollins’ severe deadline. From start to finish, Marker Seven designed and developed the Day in the Life Web site in three weeks.
With vivid images and color, the Web site design reflects the heroic operations that safeguard democracy around the world. The site is easy-to-use with one-click navigation from the home page directly to specific information. The Web site proved to be an essential tool for HarperCollins to attract the public’s interest and improve book sales.
Photographers created an inspiring visual reminder in A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES of the routine and heroic operations, the courage, the sacrifices and dedication, that are necessary to defend America 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The "Day in the Life" series which has resonated with readers for over two decades, includes the best-selling A Day in the Life of America, published in 1986, was on the New York Times Bestseller list for over 57 weeks and 1.2 million copies in print.
