Marker Seven, a San Francisco based Web development company, brings technological advances to the San Francisco School Alliance’s (SFSA) scholarship site, the student friendly www.MaisinScholars.org, that has an ease of use designed to encourage more San Francisco students to apply for the scholarship. The technical aspects of the Web site, the content management and database features in particular, allow the SFSA to quickly and easily access important information in order to better serve its award winners; the ease of use extends to the students themselves, as the application process starts with the download of the application from the public part of the site (2007 applicants have until March first to apply).

The Web site benefits extend to students and SFSA alike. Via the extranet aspect of the site, students are able to easily update their contact and education information and download the scholarship renewal application. Recipients of the scholarship are even able to renew their applications online for up to three years after their first award (for a total of four years). The SFSA is able to quickly and easily login to the site and send email to all previous scholars (scholarship has been available since 2000), alerting them to the new site and asking them to update contact information and renew their applications online.
The Maisin Scholar award is given to students who have exhibited a commitment to furthering their education, in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Each year, 70 students are awarded up to four years of scholarship support, at $1,500 per school year. Maisin Scholar award is helping San Francisco youth take great strides toward a positive future. This scholarship recognizes the hard work and dedication of students with below-perfect GPA’s, and those with goals both in and outside of the university system, supporting ongoing education at vocational schools as well as universities. The program is run by the San Francisco School Alliance, a non-profit organization whose mission is to catalyze positive improvements in San Francisco’s public schools by building programs & partnerships, raising money, and advocating for policies so that every student in every classroom in San Francisco’s public schools receives a world-class education.
With a goal of bettering the school experience for San Francisco public school students, SFSA’s Director, Administration & Programs, Garrick Ramirez, had high expectations for the quality, impact and process of designing the new Maisin Scholars site. Marker Seven donated the cost of creating a state of the art content management system (CMS) to SFSA. This CMS gives the SFSA the ability to edit the text content on the Maisin site via their Web browser. It allows the SFSA to keep future costs down, while keeping the site current and effective.
